Are You Heading In the Right Direction?

by Frank

The road ahead was illuminated with the bright red color of brake lights. The traffic which was just a moment ago flowing smoothly and rapidly towards my destination has now come to a screeching halt. In my rear view mirror, I quickly glance to see if the traffic behind me has began to respond to the grid lock that was ahead. Yet, I was startled by the young mother driving the minivan behind me, whom eyes widened and face turned pale as she stomped the breaks to avoid merging my back seat with the front of my car.

There we all sat in our stationary motorized vehicles wasting the expensive gas we put in them to run. Then after a devastatingly long 15 minute wait, the traffic began to inch forward. However, this slow and steady turtle pace was not enough to get me where I needed to go and allow me to arrive on time. I had to find another way. I had to either maneuver through this traffic or find an alternative route.

Alternative Routes

Not liking my odds of reaching my destination on time, I make my way from one lane to the other in stop in go traffic. I forced my way across a four lane highway to determine another way to get where I am going. Other than the freeway that I take daily, I am not familiar with another way to get where I need to go. However, I know there is a road that runs parallel to the freeway I could take. But, how far does it travel north and where will it lead me.

If not that road, I am sure there is another street that travels north that will bring me to an intersection that travels east. I am used to taking the most expedient route to get me to my destination. I wasn’t prepared for a detour. City’s are designed on a grid so it shouldn’t be too difficult to find my way, right?

Traveling the Wrong Way

I finally make it to the exit ramp and start to make my way off of the freeway. The traffic behind me is thick as everyone seemed to have the exact same idea that I had. But, these people seem to know where they are going. The one lane exit ramp quickly split into four separate turning lanes all going in different directions. I didn’t know which way to go so like most people do when they are trying to figure things out, I slowed down.

This act caused the cars behind me to tailgate so closely that I could have asked the driver in rear of me to pass me my coffee. People swerved, cursed, and used sign language (middle finger) not happy that I decided to slow down to figure out where I needed to go. Panicked, I turned at the first street I could find.

Needless to say, now I don’t know where I am. I am completely unfamiliar with my surroundings. Everything seems foreign to me. In fact, I couldn’t tell you what direction I am heading in. I am going the way that traffic dictates I should go. When the road turns, I turn. When the road curves, I curve. When the road ends, I stop and head back in the other direction. I drove around for hours frustrated, frightened and hungry. I finally say enough is enough and stop at the first gas station I see and buy me a map.

Heading in the Right Direction

Now I know where I am. The road and the angry drivers behind me no longer dictate where I go. I hold the power in my hands to determine what route it is that I want to take. I am in charge of making the right decision to reach my destination. I don’t have to waste my time going the wrong way. I’m back on track and all my driving has me close to right where I need to be. I’m so close to my destination.

Personal Life Map (Spark)

This fictitious story about a man trying to reach a destination is talking about more than having the wisdom to buy a map. It speaks to the very core of what may people are struggling with in their day to day lives. People are stuck. They are in a state where they don’t want to be and they end up doing anything they can to try to get out of it.

However, doing anything will get you lost and when you are lost the world will dictate the direction that you go in. You might be lost mentally, spiritually, and in many other forms. Someone is lost in a job. They don’t have a clue where they want to go in their career. People are lost in relationships trying to determine if this person is right for them. Many are lost with their entire lives not knowing what their purpose is and what they should do next.

In life, we should all strive to continually improve. In order for us to reach our maximum potential, we have to have an idea of what we are working for and what we are trying to reach. The fastest way to get from one point to another is a straight line. You need to know where you are going and the route to get there. Now, don’t get me wrong there will always be detours. We just have to make sure we are always headed in the right direction. For that reason, I am developing a Personal Life Map.

The Personal Life Map that I am creating will help you answer these deep questions.

Where are you?
Where do you want to be?
What are you going to do?
How are you going to get there?

It will provide you with the tools to determine where you are and help you plan the next steps to get where you want to go. Use this tool to take control of your day and take back control of your life.
