Start Right Now

by Frank

start button“What are you waiting on?”

I heard this question so many times over the last few years that I seriously thought about buying a t-shirt with my answer on it so people would leave me alone. It just amazes me how everyone in the world can see when you are not living up to your potential but they struggle so hard to see the same greatness within themselves. Being a man of quick wit and infinite charm (long term dream I figured I could force upon you), I would often fire back at the people who would ask me this question a simple response.

“You. I’m waiting on you to get started.”

The Excuses We Often Use To Not Start Right Now

That response always gets me an interesting answer. This is where the excuses and self doubting comments begin to form and pour out of their pores like sweat of a three hundred pound man in the sauna.

“I just don’t have the talent you do.”
“I don’t know what to do yet.”
“I don’t know what I’m good at.”
“We are different because you know what you are suppose to do.”
“I really don’t have a clue where my passions are.”
“I don’t know where to begin.”
“I’m going to start, tomorrow.”
“I’m waiting on the right opportunity.”
“Somehow, someway, someday, I am going to go for it.”

Does this sound familiar to you at all? Have you ever found yourself using these statements?

Not even once?

Now, don’t lie! We all have used at least one of these phrases at some point of our life. Let me clarify that these phrases are not bad until you repeat them over 100 times through the course of several years never making any attempt or progress to address them. It’s okay to not have everything figured out yet. It’s perfectly natural to have some confusion around a process you have never completed. However, it is not okay to never try. I challenge you to try.

The Two Simple Questions You Have to Ask Yourself To Start Now

I wouldn’t dare attempt to belittle your ambition, my only hope is I can inspire your action. Instead of pointing the finger and asking others the difficult question about their starting point, when are we going to begin turning that finger back towards the person it is attached to and start asking ourselves the same. If you truly want to encourage me it would be much more effective to lead by example.

Today, I want us to take a moment and look within ourselves to make some momentum on one of the most difficult tasks in the world – starting.

If you don’t like where you are today, ask yourself these questions:

1. Where do I want to go?
2. What is the first step I need to take to get there?

Nothing else matters right now. Financing doesn’t matter. Your network doesn’t matter. Your background or education does not matter. All that matters is the vision of where you want to go and the knowledge of the first step required to point you in the right direction.

Let’s begin something new today.
