Stop Holding Back: There’s Too Much at Stake

by Frank

Each person on this planet has a unique allotment of strengths. These strengths, also referred to as gifts or talents, if used to their best potential, has the power to change an individual, family, community, and maybe even the world. Determining what that strength is may sometimes be a challenge. These strengths may also widely vary from person to person. I like to think my strength is writing. My wife is an excellent singer. Ian, my oldest son is a natural at making people laugh. Ethan, my youngest son, is good at, well, learning. He is a two year old sponge who works part time as a wrecking ball.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN STRENGTHS GO UNUSED

“The giftedness is usually greater than the person.” – Author Fred Smith

It is our responsibility to use these God given strengths to the best of our ability.  When we don’t reach our maximum potential, we rob ourselves and the world of the amazing gift that we have been bestowed. Imagine the world if Picasso never picked up a paint brush. Imagine the world if Shakespeare never picked up a quill pen. Imagine the world if George Washington Carver never created peanut butter. (I love peanut butter.) These people are just a random select few who I believed attempted to reach their full potential in their craft. Who knows what masterpiece lies within you dormant waiting to be activated by your resolve.

We can’t selfishly bury our talents because they are bigger than us. When our strengths go unused, great things aren’t able to happen through us.

DISCOVERING AND USING STRENGTHS

However, I must admit that I know there are many who have not yet discovered their strengths. It is a treasure that is hidden deep within their homes that they just don’t know how to find. Others know their gift and don’t use it. They wake up everyday, see their gift on the table, and walk by it without opening it. Over time it gets lost in the clutter of everyday living and ends up buried in a pile with old hopes and dreams. Some people only use a portion of their gift. They have taken the time to pull of the wrapper, see what was buried beneath the paper, and made a decision to only use a portion of it.

“Destiny is not a matter of chance, it is a matter of choice; it is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved.” William Jennings Bryan

WHY DO PEOPLE CHOOSE TO ONLY USE A PORTION OF THEIR STRENGTHS

Fear – Terrified of making a mistake.
Opinions of Others – The concern about what others will think of you stop you from reaching your potential.
Lack of Confidence – You don’t believe great things are capable by you.
Perfectionism – The feeling that you can’t do it perfectly so you won’t do it at all.

WHAT WE MISS BY NOT USING OUR STRENGTHS

Fulfillment
Joy
Peace
Purpose
Being a Blessing to Others

There is so much at stake when we bury our talents. Our impact goes far beyond our limited vision and selfish aspirations. With a greater understanding of what we can do in comparison to what we will do, we are empowered to make a choice to be the best we can be or let fear, the opinions of others, and perfectionism keep us from living a fulfilled and purposeful life. Stop living beneath your means. Give yourself and the world everything you’ve got. It is truly a win-win situation. If you want great things, are willing to attempt great things, then get out there and do great things using all of the gifts that has been given to you. Stop holding back.

The world is waiting on you!
